Author's Note: This is actually my second idea for an MFA Fanfic. The first idea is still being written but has been referenced by Viljo in one of his posts on fencing. This is part one in what will be an ongoing series involving Katherine, Sasha, and Elijah. Feel free to reuse any characters in your fiction, but please ask first. Feed back is appreciated.
The Triangle Part 1: The Duel
For two weeks since her arrival, the garment bag in Katherine Diana Hawthorne's closet had been demanding her attention. When she had brought it to the school and put it away to go untouched, she had expected it to tempt her every morning. She knew that she'd think of it day in and day out until she finally wore it. What she hadn't expected, was that the thought of the coordinate inside the bag would preoccupy her during classes. One minute she'd be listening to her literature class, and the next would have been doodling herself in the outfit. After thinking about it almost constantly for two full weeks, she was unsurprised that the dress started making an appearance in her dreams.
Katherine didn't come from the kind of money that her roommate, Sasha did. Katherine had put together her outfits on a small budget over the course of time. She'd pick up a piece or two one month, and often go months without anything new. But this outfit, this was her pride and joy. She had decided that she wouldn't wear it until the right moment. This became its own problem. She hadn't a clue what or when that right moment would be.
As a first year, she had come into the school not knowing what to expect. Her arrival at the school did reveal to her that she was out of place several days of the week. Within two days of attending the school, she had started hiding some of her homemade skirts instead of wearing them. If she hadn't been told in her sewing class that it was important to keep old projects, she would have already done so by now.
After seeing how outdone others were around her, she knew that her garment bag was her secret weapon. She would put it on the very day that she needed to get noticed. And, given the severe lack of boys attending the school, she suspected that getting attention was going to be important if she wanted to get one. She kept scolding herself after she had thoughts like that. She didn't come here to meet boys; she came here to get a decent education and become a fine, upstanding lady. And, if all else failed, she could break out the garment bag when she put on her first dance performance. She knew it would be only a matter of time before she'd have to do that. That could be months from now. She wasn't so sure she could wait that long.
As it turned out, she didn't have to wait long. She found a better reason than to break out her secret weapon than for a dance performance. She was enjoying a walk in the indoor gardens when she found her reason. His name was Elijah Henry Wade. Katherine, like most girls at this school, had an interest in boys. Yet, in her time attending the school, she hadn't found any that fit her type. The truth be told, she didn't even know what her type was until she met Elijah. Before coming to Millie-Feuille Academy, she had a long, laundry list of characteristics, features, and personality traits that she avoided like the plague. Of course, at her old school, there were no guys into any form of Japanese street fashion. Here, everything was different. And Elijah quickly proved to become the model of her type.
Elijah was tall, not a towering height, but enough that she'd be looking up at him while wearing her heels and platforms. His hair was blonde, something that she had put on her list for people she'd avoid, but his blonde was different. It didn't count if it was a perfect color blonde, did it? She couldn't see his eyes at first when she saw him. She hoped they weren't blue, because that was on her list. If it was, she'd have to admit she was wrong about the eye color as well. His style was also to be desired. He wore oiji like the style had been designed for him.
It was the familiar red and white circular device that he wore on his waist that cemented it in her mind to approach the then unknown student. Katherine wasn't your typical Pokemon fan. She had spent countless hours playing the game. She wasn't the kind to consider using a cheating device either. She did all of the work herself and was proud of her progress. She reached into her Hello Kitty! bag and pulled out her own Pokewalker. She took a few seconds to acknowledge her Zubat as she happily announced it had found something for her. After adding the extra energy into her profile, she approached the student. If this guy was worth her special outfit, he had to be willing to at least link pokewalkers.
“Care to link?” she asked. She had mulled over a couple of different ways to approach him from direct to subtle. In the end, she decided asking him a question that would confuse him and allow her to feign embarrassment would be a good starting place.
Elijah had been reading a poetry book on a bench in front of a colorful display of lilacs when she approached him. He glanced up from his book to be sure that Katherine was talking to him. When he saw that there was no one else that she could be talking to, he slipped a small ribbon into the book and closed it.
“I beg your pardon?” he asked. His voice was about as wonderful as the student looked.
Katherine flushed her cheeks and hid her lips behind her gloved hand. When it came to feigning embarrassment, she was queen. From her personal experience, others found her more attractive when she flushed with color. At least, that's what she had been told her. She had had to deal with one classmate in her last school who would do things to embarrass her in order to get her to blush. She originally thought that John's intentions were completely innocent. She liked the attention and even though half of the things John did were actually embarrassed, she let herself flush with color. It wasn't until he had confessed that he did it because she looked cute when she blushed, that she stopped. John was definitely not her type and she didn't want to encourage that behavior.
She held out her pokewalker once had she pulled her hand away from her lips. “I thought you might want to link walkers.”
His green eyes (she was so pleased to know they weren't blue) eyed her over with a careful, contemplative inspection. Then, a corner of his lip turned up with the strangest, most adorable smile she had ever seen in her life. She blushed again, this time for real. He was checking her out, and he wasn't making any attempt to hide it. If he reacted like this in her everyday Sweet style, she couldn't wait until she broke out her special outfit.
“Sure, let me unhook it.” He reached down and unfastened the walker. He shifted over on the bench and patted the spot beside him. “The name's Elijah. I'm a second year. You don't look familiar.”
Katherine curtseyed and introduced herself before taking a seat next to him. She felt butterflies growing inside her. She wanted to try really hard to impress him, but didn't want to scare him away. “Its a pleasure to meet you, Elijah. I'm a first year.”
They took a moment to link and exchange pokemon gifts. Katherine slipped the walker back into her purse and set it beside her. “How long have you been playing?”
“I've been playing for a few years, my sister gave me her copy of Pearl when Platinum came out. What about you?”
“I've been an avid player since the Ruby and Sapphire days. You don't happen to have the game on you, do you?”
Elijah shook his head. “Sorry, I usually leave it in the dorm room. You wanted to trade?”
Katherine rested a finger on the corner of her mouth and gave a mischievous smile. She was trying hard to impress Elijah and it seemed to be working. Sure, she could trade, but Elijah struck her more of the dueling type. “I was thinking a duel. I've got a level one Eevee with maxed IV on speed and a decent HP IV.”
“Sounds like a good deal, I've got a spare Spiritomb I'd be willing to part with if I lose.”
“Deal.”
“When do you want to meet up and do this?”
Elijah slipped his own Pokewalker way. “Here works. Does four in the afternoon sound?”
She had planned to go to a study session then. She was struggling with her biology class and planned on joining a group of students working on the class together. As much as she would like to get caught up and assure herself a stronger grade in the class, impressing Elijah was far more important. She could always spent extra time later working on trying to get caught up in class.
“Four sounds great, you want to meet here?”
“Four o'clock here. See you then.”
Katherine skipped all of the way back to her room, happier than she could recall having been in a very long time. And that, she found impressive. When she had started here at the school, she had thought she had reached the happiest point in her life. She could only imagine what would happen come tomorrow when she broke out her special outfit.
She was so excited as she entered her room, she failed to notice her roommate, Sasha was sitting at her desk reviewing a paper. Her roommate folded her hands together in front of her and rested her chin on them. She waited for her Katherine to notice before she rose an eyebrow to give her telltale, inquisitive look. “Looks like someone had a good day. What happened?”
“Elijah is what happened.”
“Elijah?” Sasha unfolded her hands and shifted in her seat. Katherine had her undivided attention.
“Only the most attractive boy in the entire school?”
“I doubt that. The boy sitting next to me in Etiquette class has to be a contender for that position.”
Katherine flopped onto her bed dramatically with a fake faint. “Well, Elijah and I have a date tomorrow. I can't wait.”
“A date? Congratulations, Katherine. What kind of a date is it?”
She grinned, “A pokemon battle of all things, if you can believe that.”
The two of them laughed. “I can already hear the stories you'll tell your children.”
She nodded her head. She wasn't sure if Sasha was being sarcastic or serious. But she accepted the statement as being in fun.
“So what are you planning on wearing tomorrow?”
“I'm going to break out my best,” Katherine said a bit too sharply. Katherine didn't have money like Sasha did. Not everyone couldn't by brand on a weekly basis. She was lucky to have the replicas that she did own. Having her very own piece of AP was magical.
“I'll tell you what,” Sasha said trying to settle her mood. “As long as you stay away from my future boyfriend in etiquette class, and I'll help you with your makeup and hair.”
“Deal, now that I've got Elijah, nothing else matters. So how is your etiquette class? I decided to take it next semester. I'm starting to wish I'd put off biology first.”
“It is torture. There are so many rules to memorize. I thought it would be more practice walking around with a book balanced on your head or holding tea cups for hours on end. There is way too much reading and papers. Who assigns a paper for an etiquette class?”
“You want to trade? Our teacher gave us our final on the first day of class and resigned a few weeks later. You can't explain that! And the new teacher is making us do the final. Have you seen it yet? It is a novel! And I don't get any of this cell membrane talk. What good are discussions of cell division and enzymes going to do to help us out later in life?”
“Don't tell me that, I have to take that class next semester.”
“If this keeps up, I'll be retaking it with you.”
“What's your plan for tomorrow?”
“I'm planning on impressing him with my perfect Pokemon team.”
“What kind of team do you have?”
“I lead off with a Forretress and have a mix of others in the lineup including an epic Gardevoir and a Metagross sweeper.”
“Sounds impressive!”
“Do you want to see it in action?”
“No, I haven't played in a few years.”
“Well, I'll let you know how it goes.”
It was too much for Katherine to hope for that she and Sasha had put aside all of their problems. For the rest of the night, the two got along. There were no squabbles like they had had in the past. Though, part of that might have been due to Katherine's desperate attempt to make progress on her biology work and Sasha's etiquette paper. In the morning, things had reverted back to normal.
“So tell me you have something more than the drab outfits you have been wearing,” Sasha said as soon as she had returning from her morning shower.
“They aren't drab,” Katherine said. She bit back her more pointed response. “And I do have something special for today.”
She reached into her closet and pulled out her garment bag. Slowly, she unzipped the bag, revealing the the distinct style of her Candy Treat one piece. This was the real deal, not some replica. She had paid top dollar for this, and all of the accessories that she was going to have go with it. She pulled out the dress and set it carefully on her bed.
“Okay, Katherine. I'm impressed, but tell me that's not all we have to work with.”
Katherine was eating this up. She should have been offended, Sasha was almost rude the way she was talking to her. She let it all slide. She was going to shine today and her roommate was going to stand second to her on this magical day. Digging further into her closet, she produced more, much more than her roommate ever would have suspected. She had a wig, cotton candy pink and pre-styled for the occasion. She had a slightly off-pink cutsaw and a pair of white Mary Janes that had both gone unworn before today. And she had enough deco to go with the outfit, it had made her own tooth ache to think about herself. By the time she had brought everything out, the only thing Sasha could do was whistle.
Katherine climbed into her cutsaw and jsk and modeled them off briefly with the wig on to earn a few more compliments from her roommate. After earning what she felt was long overdo praise, she took a seat at her powder desk. She let Sasha work her magic with the make up. Sasha worked with a speed and accuracy that surprised her. It took a good ten minutes, but when the wig went back on, Katherine knew that today she looked perfect.
Another ten minutes later, and Katherine had all of her deco on. And the last thing she wanted to do was leave the room. She wanted to stay in front of the mirror all day and admire herself. It looked impressive. She noticed that her roommate couldn't pull her eyes away. Finally she came up and took Katherine's arm in her hands.
“Katherine, I have to admit that seeing you like that is turning me on. Elijah is going to love you when he sees you on your date today.”
“You flatter me,” she said blushing.
“I'm serious, you aren't Mr. Etiquette, but I'd be lying if I didn't admit how striking you are like that. I'm truly jealous of Elijah.”
“Well I have you to thank for the amazing make-up.” To express her appreciation, she leaned in and gave Sasha a kiss on her cheek. She saw Sasha flush and felt her own cheeks go red.
“I want a picture of you before you are allowed to leave the room. We have to hurry though, I have Early British Literature “
Katherine gave her roommate a few quick poses and then she too was rushing out the door for her own morning class. Her first class of the day was Geography. She not only liked being in the class, be she excelled at it. Geography as a subject was alright. She just didn't get why it was so important to know the difference between Estonia and Latvia. When she walked into the class, all eyes fell on her. She gave them a curtsey and took her seat.
Class went well, but was grueling. She spent most of the class looking to the clock on the wall, checking the time. She very much wanted it to be four. She packed up her books and notebook and ran off to her next class. Her Algebra class wasn't as bad as biology, but it came close. She had been trying to practice, but it was the worst time of day for her class. After a while, it just go so boring.
After making it through the cruel dragging, Algebra class, she endured the horrific Biology class and her own English Lit. The last class was her final obstacle from her and Elijah. She did her very best to endure every second of that class and tried doubly hard to pay attention. The moment the class ended, she flew out the door and made her way to arrive early and meet up with Elijah.
She arrived seven minutes early and found the gardens barren. She took a seat and the opportunity to check on her hair and make up. Sasha's work still looked great so she smiled proudly and pulled a book out of her purse. She pulled out a copy of Wuthering Heights and continued reading the next chapter. She wanted to look her best and studious when Elijah arrived. She had no idea what kind of girl he was into. Whatever it happened to be, she would be that girl.
Every few minutes, she checked her cellphone to check the time. As it grew closer to four, she started grew more and more nervous. When her phone displayed the time to be three past four, she started to wonder if she had the wrong time or wrong location. She was certain though that they had agreed to both this time and this location. When her cellphone told her it was eleven past four, she was too anxious to continue reading. She wondered where Elijah was.
He finally walked into the room at quarter past four. He saw her and stopped in his tracks. She rose, smiled politely. “Good afternoon, Elijah.”
“Katherine, you look stunning!” he said. He pulled himself back together enough to walk over to her. He rubbed the hair on the back of his head with his right hand. “I'm sorry I'm late. I got distracted at the end of my last class and lost track of time.”
“I hope it wasn't anything serious.”
“Nope, just talking to a classmate.”
“Shall we begin?”
“Yeah, about that. I was checking out my stuff last night and it turns out I don't have that Spiritomb. I don't have anything decent to trade. I'm sorry. I totally forgot that I traded it with my ex. It was right before the world's messiest breakup.”
“Oh, well we don't have to trade.”
“No, it wouldn't be a true Pokemon duel without something to trade. We can just trade something else instead.”
She leaned back and thought about it. She didn't have too much to trade on her. Most of the items in her hand bag were items the kind of thing he wouldn't be interested in. She had her deco items as well, and he highly doubted he would be interested in any of those. There wasn't too much she could really give him. However, she knew she had a good team, so it didn't matter too much what she wagered. She was going to win and could put a bit of a risk on it. She finally decided that she'd tease him with wagering a kiss. She wouldn't lose, of course, and hopefully he wouldn't think her to forward.
“If I lose, I'll let you kiss me.”
He curled his lips. “I'll tell you what. If you win, I'll give you my grandfather's pocket watch.”
It didn't seem like a fair deal. She was going to win and didn't want to take his watch. “Are you sure that you want to wager something like that?”
“Sure,” he said with a clearly overconfident grin on his face. “Besides, I've got a good team. I'm going to win.”
She wasn't so sure about it, and pulled out her DS. They spent a few minutes making sure everything was prepared for the duel and then engaged with their team. Elijah's lead was impressive. Absol wasn't the lead she expected. It wasn't until he switched out that she saw that she was going to win. She had hoped to play things out until near the end and then decide what to do, but she was going to win, there was no doubt about it. She couldn't take the watch, it shouldn't go to her. She could win and refuse to take it, but that wouldn't be right. So she started throwing bad choices in moves. She made the occasional bad switch outs, and didn't play at her top game. Even then, her sweeper took out two of Elijah's team before going down, and that was with her using the worst move possible.
When the last of her team fell, she flipped the screen closed.
“I lost,” she said with false indignation. She could have won over ten minutes ago if she had wanted. But she wouldn't take Elijah's watch.
“You lost,” he said. There was no pride or bragging in his tone. He said it as matter of fact as he could.
It would be her first kiss. She had hoped for something more magical than this. Elijah was nice and she hadn't wanted to take his grandfather's watch. She closed her DS without shutting it off and ignored the flashing green light as she slipped it into her hand bag. She rose with a bright smile and stood. Elijah rose as well and walked over to face her. She closed her eyes and leaned in slowly.
She connected with his lips and planted a small peck. It was a simple kiss, the kind one might leave on a mother's cheek. The kiss expanded as Elijah melted into the kiss. Her hesitation and reluctant to follow through on her end of the wager immediately dissipated as it became quite intense. Elijah's lips parted and she found that her own did the same. She felt a hand brush the side of her cheek and slip behind her hair.
He pulled her toward him, one hand on the side of her head, behind the pink flowing hair of her wig, the other on her side, almost wrapped around them. She tasted his mouth, the cinnamon flavored gum he must have had before arriving and her tension eased. Her body throbbed with pleasure and she found her arms wrapping around Elijah as well. And then, she felt her lips part more as Elijah slipped his tongue inside.
The kiss could not have lasted for more than a few minutes, but for Katherine, it seemed an eternity. Her body was flooded with electrical sparks of pleasure and she wanted more, much more, but every ounce of her mind was telling her to disengage. Why should she? This was what she wanted. Still, she felt it prudent not to rush herself. She slowly pulled back and away from Elijah. He smiled at her, a satisfied smile that assured her he too had loved every second.
“I should get going,” she said feeling the need to get him from her sight before she did something she might actually regret. She wanted so much, but this day had been perfect and she wanted to remember it that way.
“Can we exchange numbers first?” he asked.
She nodded her head and pulled out her phone. When the two had exchanged numbers, she departed and rushed from the room. She wasn't even half-way to her dorm when her phone chimed to indicate a new text. She flipped it open and blushed at what she read.
“Best kiss ever”
